Here in this video with a former student, we are once again going back to no contact sparring. When we do contact sparring and there is too much contact, sometimes we go back to no contact sparring as a way to slow it back down to learn what mistakes are happening that is resulting in the excessive contact. It is the beginners way to spar.

No contact sparring is what I always start off with when I work with beginners. Engaging in no contact sparring, I can already predict what would occur with contact. No contact sparring is the advanced version of shadow boxing.

When shadow boxing, you are using your imagination and you are responding off of this imagination. In no contact sparring, it is no longer imagination; the opponent is right in front of you trying to attack you. This allows you the opportunity to work on your reflexes and countering abilities. This type of training is very beneficial, something that a punching bag alone cannot provide but a wooden dummy can. It allows you to work on the defensive aspects of combat, not just the offensive.

Anybody can kick or punch, but not many know what to do when somebody is trying to kick or punch you. But even kicking or punching, beginners end up hurting themselves too when they don’t do it properly.

I’ve done no contact sparring so much that it is no longer beneficial for my own personal development, I no longer find benefit in engaging in no contact sparring, I find more benefit from training with the wooden dummy. Though the beginning student can learn a lot from the engagement.

I do have motivation to engage in contact sparring in order to demonstrate the advanced expression of FMK Safe Sparring but finding and developing the students who are physically, combatively, and spiritually prepared to engage in contact safe sparring is a very tough and long process which I have almost given up hope on.

I’ve come to the conclusion that once you reach the advanced level of technique expression, the utilization of the wooden dummy is the only reliable training tool that will help you progress and advance further in your development in the combative aspects of the Martial Arts.
