Meanwhile, social organizations in Colombia demand that the government address the underlying causes spurring migration to Venezuela. An estimated 5 million Colombians live in Venezuela, many of them displaced by the country's civil war, others seeking jobs and economic security. Activists say the government has thus far ignored the migration phenomenon and now must deal with issues of border area smuggling and paramilitary activity.
