In 2008, DAP's Charles Santiago captured the Klang Parliamentary constituency for the Pakatan Rakyat opposition coalition by a 17,701 majority. He polled 37,990 votes over MCA's Ch'ng Toh Eng who garnered 20,289 votes.

In the 2008 12th general election, Klang had 77,816 eligible voters. Chinese comprised the majority at 47%, Malays at 34% and Indians comprised 19% of the voters.

Five years hence, the electoral statistics have changed. It is now 97,252 eligible voters comprising:

Chinese 46%
Malays 32%
Indians 20%
