Turkey: with deadline looming, AKP fails to form coalition government

Turkey’s political future is in limbo after talks between the ruling AK Party and the leftist MHP Party broke down.

Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu initiated the meeting following earlier failed discussions with the CHP Republican People’s Party.

Snap elections could be on the horizon if an agreement is not reached by August 23, 2015.

A sticking point at the talks appears to have been the two parties’ stances on the role of the president.

Historically, the president has been a figurehead. However in a recent address, Recep Tayyip Erdogan appeared to suggest he would extend his powers.

The MHP denounced Erdogan and said it wouldn’t support an AKP minority government or snap elections.
