Fighters for a better Malaysia win 2013 civil society honours

National Laureate A Samad Said was among those chosen for the 4th Civil Society Awards 2013 held last night.

Beside Samad, also chosen for their struggle for a better Malaysia were Save Hotel Lok Ann and BERSIH 3.0 support group.

The awards, which were conferred at the Kuala Lumpur Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall, also saw seven other individuals and organizations being nominated for the civic effort and strugle for the past two years.

They include the Raub anti-cyanide gold mining activist Wong Kin Hoong, Muslim NGO Islamic Renaissance Front and The Save Yong Vui Kong campaign.

Samad Said better known as Pak Samad upon receiving his award instead of giving the usual speech choose to read out his poem "Mengenang Tragedi Teoh" to the respectful silence of the crowd.
