Peru: Mining Companies Benefit from Elimination of Fines

2015-08-12 12

Independent investigative journalists working in Peru have revealed that mining companies are benefitting from the elimination of fines. The Peruvian government has not charged these companies with fines ranging from US$ 6 to 10 million for environmental violations, due to a law reducing the ability of the public entity to impose penalties. The law was pushed by the Ollanta Humala administration last year. The beneficiaries are 47 billionaire U.S. based companies that have been found guilty of damaging the environment.
