Parliamentary Elections Underway in Haiti

2015-08-09 3

After long-delayed elections in 2011 and 2014, Haitians go to the polls on Sunday to fill the seats left empty in Parliament. Two-thirds of the Senate and all members of the Chamber of Deputies are up for election. Given the absence of lawmakers, President Michel Martelly has ruled by decree since January of 2015. After years of turmoil prompted by the 2004 coup against President Jean Bertrand Aristide, voter apathy is high, but many hope that these elections, in which 105 political parties are fielding candidates, will be a step towards stability. teleSUR
