A new species of anglerfish found in the deep waters off the Gulf of Mexico has a fishing pole-like appendage growing out of the top of its head; it is a tool thought to be used to lure prey in the scarce and competitive food environment.

The creatures that live in the inhospitable waters of the deep ocean systems are still largely a mystery, but a new, very distinct-looking creature has recently been identified. 

This new species of anglerfish has a disproportionately large head that features lateral eyes, translucent teeth and whiskers, and, most notably, an appendage growing out of the top that looks like a bent fishing pole.
