When making a Mint Julep you need the following:
4-6 leaves of mint
2-2 1/2 oz of Maker's Mark (the recommended bourbon for this drink)
2 tbs. or 1 oz of simple syrup (you can use store bought Sugar Cane Juice)
Crushed Ice
A splash of water if you prefer.

a Hi-Ball Glass (any glass that holds 8-10 oz)
a muddler or elongated device with a flat end that fits in a glass
a stir spoon of some kind

First you will want to muddle (bruise not mash) your mint with the 1 oz or 2 tbs. of simple syrup and 1/2 oz of bourbon. When you are done muddling let it sit for few minutes. This will allow for the bourbon, simple syrup, and mint to really come together. This technique really makes the drink more palatable. Next, fill the glass all the way to the top
