Mexico: Gov't Launches New Education Dept. to Weaken Oaxaca Teachers

2015-07-22 3

The Mexican federal government and the governor of Oaxaca announced yesterday the creation of a new education department in the conflict ridden southern state. The move was openly justified as a measure to weaken the combative radical teachers' union in Oaxaca, which had a strong institutionally codified presence in the now defunct department, and to increase educational efficiency and quality. In response, the union announced it would step up its militant protests. teleSUR
