In the ongoing struggle between the Mexican government and community self-defense organizations in the violence-ridden state of Michoacan, the village of Santa María Ostul was the scene of the latest confrontation. For the past 5 years the indigenous coastal community has had an armed self-defense force to deal with organized crime and drug cartels, but on Sunday the military moved to disarm it, in the process killing 2 children and wounding several residents.
