Equivalent fractions - Two or more fractions, which represent same part or proportion of a complete thing, are called equivalent fraction.

For example, if we say,

(2/5) of 40 or

(4/10th of 40)

Both are equal to 16. Hence we can conclude that

2/5 and 4/10 are equivalent fractions.

When we multiply and divide both the numerator and the denominator of the given fraction by the same nonzero number, we get an equivalent fraction. Continuing with the above example, if we divide both 4 and 10 in fraction 4/10 by 2, we get 2/5, which is the other fraction.
