German foreign minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said that new allegations of US spying on senior German government officials’ telephones need to be clarified “as quickly as possible.”
Relations between the two nations took a diplomatic blow two years ago when WikiLeaks reported German chancellor Angela Merkel’s mobile phone had been monitored by the US National Security Agency.
“It is important that we clarify as quickly as possible about what’s really true with regard to the reports we’re reading these days,” Steinmeier told reporters.
A new list of phone numbers allege that the chancellor was not the only senior official the agency eavesdropped on.
Steinmeier said he hopes that Washington would cooperate with his investigation.
