Samuel (Jesse) Battle was a pioneer of black America — the first African American to join the police department in greater New York City. In the upcoming book “One Righteous Man: Samuel Battle and the Shattering of the Color Line in New York,” author Arthur Browne traces Battle’s amazing journey — from his childhood in North Carolina, to his days as a railway porter at Grand Central Station and a 30-year police career starting in 1911 that saw him become the city’s first African American police sergeant and then lieutenant.
