Buildings Become a New Kind of Craft
Kim Chan-joong is a celebrity architect and the founder of the architecture firm The System Lab. Known for his innovative ideas and artistic twists, Kim led a paradigm shift in architecture in Korea.
The vertical charnel house "The Last House" was inspired by the way primitive forms of life expanded their surfaces by cell division. By allowing people to contact the deceased via serial numbers, the charnel house is no longer perceived as a traumatic or emotionally threatening place.
Kim courageously adopts many industrial materials that are rarely used in architecture. The art pavilion "Cubrick," made of fiber-reinforced plastic cubes, is one of the representative examples, and this definitely shows Kim's experimental spirit. In addition, Kim designed a new kind of innovative building with a curvy facade that changed the scenery of the area. Kim has successfully created architectural craftworks with his designs. Crossing the boundaries of ordinary life and fantasy, his attempt will continue.
