Ecuador: Despite Suspension of Tax Bills, Demonstrations Continue

2015-06-18 0

Despite Ecuadoran President Rafael Correa's decision to temporary withdraw two tax bills that have sparked furious opposition from the wealthy and upper middle class, right-wing opposition demonstrations continue along with a response from supporters of the Citizens' Revolution. Correa has called for a national debate on the two fiscal measures designed to redistribute wealth, but such a discussion has been rejected by the opposition. The country's social movements, while promoting a dialogue, are explaining the issues at stake to the public. The right-wing, meanwhile, is attempting to organize a referendum to remove Correa from office. Liz Scherffius reports from Quito.
