Students waiting for their buses on the roads of Tamil Nadu.
Tamil Nadu is one of the most literate states in India. The state's literacy rate is 80.33% in 2011, which is above the national average. A survey conducted by the Industry body Assocham ranks Tamil Nadu top among Indian states with about 100% Gross Enrollment Ratio (GER) in primary and upper primary education.
It was during the British rule in India that the education system of the state of Tamil Nadu started prospering and growing by leaps and bounds. Education in Tamil Nadu, before the settlement of the English in the country and during the early years of the colonial rule, was a very private affair, with each household deciding whether their children will study in the different institutions across the state. Till the year 1813, the British East India Company did not promote education among the natives of the state of Tamil Nadu. It was in the later years, during the mid 19th century that several schools were established within Tamil Nadu. The grants that the state government authorities received from the central government were used for the promotion of education by building several schools and centers of higher education in and around Tamil Nadu. Today this South Indian state is a favorite haunt for students seeking higher education, especially professional education.
