At a rally in support of President Rafael Correa on Monday, the country’s Minister of Culture Guillaume Long says new taxes proposed by Correa are moderate, especially compared to taxes in Europe, where the taxes are much higher. He called for support for the democratic process and peaceful protests and said that anti-government protests are attempt at destabilization aimed at producing a coup. The opposition forces representing the privileged sectors of societies say their demonstrations are aimed at blocking the government’s attempt to take their money. On Sunday they had unsuccessfully tried to block Correa’s return from Europe. teleSUR
