The right-wing opposition to Ecuadoran President Rafael Correa and his Citizens' Revolution mounted renewed protests over the weekend. Demonstrations were staged to protest the proposed inheritance tax, which only affects 2% of the population. Previously, the wealthy paid virtually nothing in inheritance and capital gains taxes. On the social media some sectors of the opposition are calling on the military to intervene, posing the specter of a coup. In response, government supporters will be rallying by the thousands later today. Correa charged the opposition protests are an attempt to destabilize the country and that authorities would not give in to their demands. teleSUR
