Calm has returned to the streets of Quito and other major cities after five days of sometimes violent protests. The demonstrators have said they want to block two proposed laws on inheritance taxes and property speculation. President Rafael Correa insists that the protesters are deliberately distorting the nature of the legislation, which would only affed the richest two percent of the population. He said that supporters of the new bills in Guayaquil, Quito and Cuenca outnumbered the opposition whose true purpose is to bring down the government.
