Inside the Americas – Peruvian Farmers Struggling to Make Ends Meet

2015-06-12 2

The neoliberal politics practiced in Peru have had devastating effects on many sectors of the society, including cattle ranchers. In this edition of Inside the Americas we meet Edgar Delgado, who is struggling to surmount two major obstacles. One of them is the permission large companies have to use cheap, low-quality powdered milk, with which local producers can hardly compete. The other is the monopolization of the industry, with one company controlling 80% of milk sales nationwide. Farmers are in debt because raising cows does not cover their basic expenses, and the government is now proposing the elimination of the few protections left for local producers. To survive, Edgar has diversified, producing a variety of milk-based products and organizing visits to give school children the opportunity to spend time with the animals. Even so, hislevel of stress has not decreased. teleSUR
