Opposition demonstrations held Wednesday night in Quito calling for the removal of Ecuadoran President Rafael Correa turned violent. Journalists and government supporters, including former Culture Minister Paco Velasco, were physically attacked and injured. The demonstrations, held over the past three days in Quito and other cities, were called to protest bills submitted by the president to Congress for a new inheritance tax and a capital gains tax that will hurt the wealthy. Three hundred riot police were on hand to separate the two sides and prevent the anti-government protesters from attacking the headquarters of the ruling País Alianza party. Correa said the recent protests were part of efforts to destabilize the country. Liz Scherffius reports from Quito.
