At the age of 5, the female was diagnosed with sickle-cell anemia. 

6 years later doctors determined that her condition had become so severe that a bone marrow transplant was required. 

As the process involves chemotherapy, which can damage the reproductive organs beyond use, one of her ovaries was removed and frozen when was 13 years old.
