Molly Shannon: 'Me and Earl and the Dying Girl' Made Me Feel Like a Young Actor Again
Sundance favorite Me and Earl and the Dying Girl was a walk down memory lane for star Molly Shannon. At the film’s Los Angeles premiere, she told The Hollywood Reporter that working with the film's young talent had her reminiscing about when she was first starting out as an actor.
"These kids, RJ [Cyler], Thomas [Mann] and Olivia [Cooke] — it was so inspiring being around them because they are young kids and are so excited about acting. It reminded me of when I first got out of acting school at NYU drama school, and how I first felt," said Shannon.
The film follows introverted high school senior Greg (Mann), who is pushed by his mother (Connie Britton) to befriend Rachel (Cooke), a girl in his class who has been diagnosed with cancer. The two form a tight bond in the coming-of-age comedy (and tearjerker) that some are comparing to The Fault in Our Stars.
Me and Earl picked up both the U.S. dramatic grand jury prize and the U.S. dramatic audience award at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival. Director Alfonso Gomez-Rejon, who had the opportunity to learn under Birdman director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, is still surprised at the praise the film has already garnered, including two standing ovations at its Sundance premiere.
"I look back at Sundance and I can’t believe it happened," said Gomez-Rejon. "It’s surreal. I’m so grateful that this movie may have a life and a chance to be seen."
Sophia Bush, Taissa Farmiga, Tony Revolori, Carla Gugino and Jeff Goldblum came out to lend support to the film's cast and crew.
Me and Earl and the Dying Girl will be released in select theaters on June 12.
