Honduras: Presidents Admits Receiving Dirty Money

2015-06-04 8

Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernandez admitted during a televised interview on Wednesday that his campaign received money from companies linked to a massive corruption scandal. About US$350 million was siphoned off from the country's Social Security Institute from 2010-2013, with US$100 million going to the ruling National Party. Hernandez said he had no knowledge of his campaign taking the funds in question and that he is committed to fighting corruption. Nevertheless, social activists charge that his party is silencing whistle blowers. The National Party is accusing the head of the Anti-Corruption Party Salvador Nassralla of defamation due to his comments on the Social Security Institute scandal. As popular discontent over government corruption rises, the opposition has called a major demonstration for Friday. Gerardo Torres reports from Tegucigalpa. teleSUR
