Protesting miners threw rocks and police used teargas as clashed broke out on the highway leading to the capital city of La Paz in Bolivia. Miners are demanding access to the Colquiri tin mine. Since the left-leaning government of Evo Morales was elected in 2005, his priority has been to re-nationalize Bolivia’s strategic resources, particularly hydrocarbons. In 2012, the government took over operations at Colquiri, drawing an angry response from the mine’s former owner, global commodities trader Glencore. Miners have been split on the nationalization of the mines. teleSUR
