Hope still remains high in Colombia that a peace agreement can be achieved that would end the armed conflict that has cost the country 220,000 lives. Nevertheless, with the recent renewal of hostilities between the government and the Revolutionary Armed Force of Colombia, which has resulted in 41 rebel deaths, concern has been expressed that the commitment to achieve peace might have weakened. Over 500 Colombian social organizations signed a joint statement urging a deescalation of tensions and acceptance of the FARC's proposal for a bilateral cease fire.
