Peru: General Strike against Mine Enters Second Day

2015-05-29 1

Almost a third of the regions in Peru continue the second day of a strike in support of protests against the proposed Tia Maria copper mine. In the Puno region, businesses are closed and roads are blocked in many cities. Peru has a long history of agricultural conflicts and anger is mounting against the State and large corporations. People feel that their rights as citizens are not being respected. In recent statements to the press, President Ollanta Humala has ignored the strike. The Minister of Mines confirmed that there will be no new environmental impact studies. Dozens of protesters have already been arrested and at least four have died in the protests. teleSUR
