A commander of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia was killed in a government attack, which comes on the heels of other military operations against the rebels earlier this month, which have left 26 guerrilla fighters dead. While the rebels have suspended their unilateral indefinite truce, they have called on the government to accept their proposal for a bilateral ceasefire, as have social movements and peace advocates. The rural population, meanwhile, has responded to the escalating military confrontations between the government and the FARC with terror, uncertainty, and fear, as hundreds have been displaced by the renewed hostilities.
