Islamic State Leaves Archaeological Destruction in its Wake

2015-05-21 1

As part of the Islamic State's (ISIS) attempts to take over oil-rich regions of the Middle East, it is leaving behind a trail of destruction of the area's archaeological treasures in its wake. The extremist group is also using the sale of antiquities and gold and other treasures to finance its activities. Syrians fear that the ancient city of Palmyra, a World Heritage Site, which just fell to ISIS, will suffer a similar fare and that culture and civilization are at stake. Hazma Abdullah reports from Syria.
