This Monday Nicaragua celebrated the 120th anniversary of the birth of Augusto Cesar Sandino, known as the “general of free men,” who led the struggle against the United States military occupation of Nicaragua in the 1920s and 1930s. He was a proponent of Latin American unity, in much the same way that Simon Bolivar was in Venezuela a century earlier.
