Professional snowmobile athlete Mike Schultz, who lost his leg during a race, has invented an award-winning sport prosthetic leg able to stand up to a high-impact lifestyle.
The device, called the Versa Foot, was built to endure pressure from such high-performance activities such as snowmobiling or motorbiking. It uses a motorized knee to regulate the joint's stiffness with compressed air as well as a pneumatic shock absorber to emulate joint resistance in the ankle and toes. Together, the prosthetic represents a very functional leg.
Schultz lost his leg in an accident while speeding over a rough patch of snow in 2008. His leg had hyperextended in the opposite direction and his knee was completely shattered, giving doctors no choice but to amputate above the knee.
