One hundred and twelve people are confirmed dead after an explosion at a Chinese poultry plant Dehui, in northeast China's Jilin province in the early hours of the morning.
According to CNN an ammonia gas explosion in the slaughterhouse triggered the inferno that took rescue workers hours to control. The explosion occurred during an early morning shift change at the poultry plant near Dehui City, Jilin Province. It is estimated about 350 workers were onsite at the time.

The explosion cut electricity and sent plumes of black smoke through the prefabricated workers' building that contained a maze of complicated and narrow hallways, making it difficult for workers to escape. The power cut may have caused doors to be locked, trapping workers inside, according to CNN. Workers slipped over each other in a desperate attempt to escape the burning building, according to CNN.

Families of victims gathered outside the poultry plant anxiously awaiting news of their loved ones. The angry and emotional crowd complained to reporters about the poor working conditions at the plant, where workers regularly performed 14 - 16 hour workdays with limited bathroom breaks and no vacation.
