Peru: General Strike Against Mining Company Gaining Ground

2015-05-14 6

The three-day general strike in Peru's Arequipa region against Southern Copper Corporation entered its second day on Wednesday. Businesses and schools were closed as the strike picked up support from students and other area residents. Critics argue that the multinational company's Tia Maria mining operations would have devastating effects on the environment and agriculture in the Tambo Valley. Area residents charge that the country's president, who before the elections was against the mining project, is now in league with Southern Copper, the third largest such company in the world, despite its poor track record in other parts of Peru.
