Man steals ambulance in front of police station to drive home

A Guadalupe man walked out of Chandler, Arizona police station on Sunday morning and allegedly thought it would be a good idea to boost an ambulance and drive home.

Spokesman for the Chandler Police Department Joe Favazzo said 33-year-old Cesar Garcia was arrested on Sunday morning for having an open container of alcohol while in a store. Garcia was drinking a beer inside the Fry's grocery store on the corner of Warner Road and Alma School Road, when he was arrested around 10:45am.

Garcia was processed at the Chandler Police Department and given a ticket before he was released.

Chandler Police said the ambulance was in the parking lot for an unrelated call. Authorities said, "it appears that Garcia did not want to walk home" to Guadalupe, so he stole the parked ambulance. No one else was in the ambulance when Garcia stole it, police said.

Chandler Police were able to track the ambulance through GPS, and notified authorities at Tempe Police station that Garcia was heading their way. When Tempe police tried to stop Garcia, he sped off and continued driving toward his house.

Garcia made it back to his house, but unfortunately so did the police. After a physical altercation with police, Garcia was arrested for the second time that day.

Garcia was charged with felony motor vehicle theft, two counts of aggravated assault on a police officer, resisting arrest, felony flight, and aggravated DUI.
