Israel freed 26 Palestinian prisoners as a precondition for restarting peace talks between Israel and Palestine.
According to Reuters, negotiators are due to convene in the afternoon in Jerusalem after a three-year stand-off ended with the first round of talks in Washington last month. Follow up meetings are expected every few weeks.
It was reported that the 26 prisoners released were the first batch of 104 Palestinians serving long jail terms, many for deadly attacks on Israelis. The released stirred anguish in Israel as many people in the country view them as terrorists. Protestors including relatives of the victims, painted their hands red to symbolize what they say is blood on the hands of the inmates.
