A man in Canada killed a cougar with a spear after the big cat attacked his 60-year-old common-law wife. The attack took place at the couple's cabin in Cow Bay on Flores Island, a remote island of the western coast of Vancouver Island.
The man and woman were gardening at around 6 p.m., but not in the same space. The cougar, which the woman had encountered two months prior, attacked her from behind. The man heard the woman scream, grabbed a boar spear he happened to have handy, then ran to her rescue and fought the beast off, according to a report by CBC. It is not yet known why the man had a board spear.
The woman survived the mauling and was airlifted to a hospital in the city of Victoria. She was initially listed in critical condition, but was upgraded to stable on Monday, the BBC reported.
The cougar did not survive the spearing, however. Authorities found its body in the bushes about 20 meters from the site of the attack, and it did appear to have died from the stab wounds. The carcass will be examined to try to determine what motivated the big cat to attack the woman.
The cougar had been prowling the area for some time. If you go to the CBC website, you'll see wicked home video of the cougar swimming around the bay, then leaping out onto the dock and trotting around among the boats like it owned the place. It was not a small creature.
