UCLA Bruins freshman wide receiver Nick Pasquale was struck by a car and killed while walking in a residential area in San Clemente early Sunday morning.
The Orange County Sheriff's Department reported that Pasquale was hit about 1:30am on Sunday.
Nick, who had recently played in his first Bruins game, was 20. Pasquale was a walk-on receiver and was starting his second season with UCLA. He made his first appearance as a Bruin in a 58-20 win over Nevada on Aug. 31.
Pasquale was walking in San Clemente apparently in the street. Two cars that were driving on the road happened to approach. The first car swerved and was able to avoid hitting Pasquale, but the second car couldn't swerve in time and hit Pasquale.
"The driver called in the accident and waited at the scene," said Lt. Gary Strachan, a spokesman for the Orange County Sheriff's Department. "No one was arrested."
Strachan said authorities were investigating why Pasquale was in the street.
"This is a tragic loss," UCLA Coach Jim Mora said. "Nick was an outstanding young man who had a positive impact on everyone who knew him. He was a great teammate who was loved and respected by his entire team. Our thoughts are with the Pasquale family."
Pasquale was an exceptional player at San Clemente High School. He was one of the main players who helped the Tritons reach the Southern Section Pac-5 championship game in 2011.
Pasquale earned the walk-on spot with UCLA and spent last season as a member of the scout team.
