Cop Randall Kerrick shot unarmed man Jonathan Ferrell 10 times in North Carolina, killing him. The unarmed was shot and killed by police while running toward them may have only been looking for help after surviving a serious car accident.
Jonathan Ferrell, 24, was shot multiple times when authorities say he surprised three Charlotte-Mecklenburg police by running at them around 2am Saturday.
Within hours after the shooting, investigators determined that Officer Randall Kerrick, 27, reaction was excessive and charged Kerrick with voluntary manslaughter in the death of Ferrell.
Ferrell played football for Florida A&M in 2009 and 2010. He had recently relocated to North Carolina.
It appears that early Saturday morning, Ferrell had a serious car accident. It was so bad that authorities think Ferrell got out of the wreck by climbing out of the back window. After exiting the vehicle, Ferrell apparently walked about a half-mile to the closest house.
A woman answered the door, but when she did not recognize Ferrell, she immediately closed the door, hit the panic button and called 911 to report that her house was being broken into.
Police responded to the call and found Ferrell close to the house. When they approached, Ferrell ran towards the police, who attempted to stop him with a Taser but failed. Authorities said he continued to run at them when Kerrick fired his gun, hitting Ferrell several times. Ferrell died at the scene.
Police have charged Officer Randall Kerrick with voluntary manslaughter. He turned himself in Saturday afternoon and was released Sunday on $50,000 bond.
