Scary clown creeps out locals in English town: If comments left on social media are an accurate gage of popular feeling, residents of Northampton, a town in central England, are overwhelmingly unhappy with the spectre of a sinister-looking clown who has been wandering their streets this past week.
This clown doesn't dance, juggle or ride tiny bicycles—he just stares. And according to one local news report, is terrifying the townsfolk. The creepy anonymous jester was first spotted on Friday the 13th, and spends his evenings unnerving people as he stares eerily at them in the evening. He has been spotted in various parts of Northampton, including Abington and Kingsley.
One woman with coulrophobic (coulrophobia is the fear of clowns) woman commented on Facebook that, "Some people do have real fears of clowns and you are terrorising them." Amid this anti-clown paranoia, the mystery mime has actually been forced to deny that he carries a knife and had received threats of violence.
Still, others have voiced their support for this unusual form of performance art.
Jay Gould wrote on his Facebook page: "Poor clown just trying to liven up Northampton and people threatening to hurt him." Alex Wynick wrote on Twitter: "Genuinely do not understand the fear of the Northampton Clown. It's just a guy with too much time on his hands."
However, two teenagers dressed in clown outfits knocked on a resident's door and asked if they could paint her windowsills—though they had no paint or brushes, USA Today reported citing an article in the Northampton Chronicle.
The clown denied any link with the two teens on a Facebook page entitled Spot Northampton's Clown and posted a message reading: "If what i am doing does get too much for people, I will have to stop."
Police say they have received no complaints of offences committed by a person dressed as a clown and are taking no action.
