A climber in the Mont Blanc mountains has made a sparkling discovery. The 20-year-old, unnamed climber, stumbled upon a metal box, buried under the ice of the mountain and after prying open the box, discovered a glittering bounty of jewels.
Rubies, sapphires and emeralds were neatly packed in pouches inside the metal box. The treasure chest is estimated to be worth up to US$300,000. The incredibly honest climber has some good karma coming his way after turning the prize over to local French police.
If the rightful owner of the sparkling find is not located, the climber may be up for a share of the loot of jewels, French officials said. Police believe the box may have come from one of two air crashes in the area.
In 1950, an Air India propeller plane crashed into the peak in bad weather. All 48 onboard the flight perished in the crash. Another crash in 1966 in almost the same area of an Air India jetliner is the most likely source of the treasure chest however.
The plane went down in suspicious circumstances that were not properly investigated.
CNN has said the Kanchenjunga is the focus of some conspiracy theories -- the Air India flight carried the father of India's nuclear industry, Homi Bhabha, and conspiracy theorists suggest it was shot down by a fighter or missile.
