A driver in Derry, Northern Ireland was ordered to transport a bomb on her bus to a police station in the city centre on Wednesday evening.

A masked man boarded the Translink bus at 6:45 p.m. and ordered the driver to transport what he said was a timed bomb device to the police station in the Derry city centre. The bus driver was told that the bomb, which had been put in a bag behind her seat, was fitted with a two-hour timer.

After the masked man had left, the driver evacuated the roughly 10 or so passengers onboard and drove alone to a remote bus station before she contacted the police.

Forty households in the neighborhood surrounding Northland Road were evacuated as police investigated the bus. Residents were allowed to return to their homes at about 3:30 a.m.

Army bomb experts confirmed that the bomb was a "viable explosive device," according to a Guardian report.

The masked man reportedly told the bus driver that he was part of a new dissident Republican group that has been targeting Derry police stations with bomb attacks.
