A star student at a San Antonio area university has been shot to death by campus police during a routine traffic stop.
Around 2:30am Friday, University of the Incarnate Word police Cpl. Chris Carter flagged down Robert Cameron Redus for speeding and driving erratically. Rather than stopping on the road where he was flagged, Redus drove around the corner into his apartment complex's parking lot.
What is known is that Redus was outside of his vehicle in the parking lot, officer Carter called for backup, and a neighbor heard Redus say, in a sarcastic tone of voice "Oh, you're gonna' shoot me now?" before being shot multiple times.
Texas Rangers have been investigating the shooting to determine whether Redus attacked officer Carter and whether he had a weapon. What friends and relatives of Redus are finding hard to believe is that the high school valedictorian and straight-A student who made the Dean's List for two semesters at his university somehow provoked the shooting.
While the investigation continues, news channels continue to find friends and relatives of Redus who testify to his good character.
Meanwhile, the officer involved has a suspect record of bouncing from department to department over the last 8 years. In that time he held nine positions at eight police agencies, never staying at one for more than 7 months. The results of the investigation remain to be released, but in much of the public psyche, this officer involved shooting has already been ruled to be unjustifiable.
