A man was shot in the head in front of his wife in a carjacking incident at an upscale New Jersey mall on Sunday (December 15) evening.

The assault took place at around 9:10 p.m. in the parking deck of the Mall at Short Hills. The husband had opened the door for his wife and was getting into the driver's side when the two assailants approached him, demanding he let them take the car.

When the husband resisted, the men fired at least two shots at him. Authorities believe that the two then jumped into the couple's 2012 Range Rover and headed east on Route 24.

The victim, 30, sustained critical injuries to his head and was rushed to Morristown Medical Center. He was pronounced dead at about 11:45 p.m. His wife was not injured.

"We do not know why that car [was targeted], but it obviously was a car with some value," Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn Murray was quoted as saying in a Star-Ledger report.

The luxury mall was briefly put on lockdown until police confirmed there was no threat to shoppers.
