Harvard student who made bomb threat to miss finals arrested

A Harvard student was arrested and charged on Tuesday with making a bomb threat that caused the evacuation of four buildings and disrupted the university during final exams, the U.S. Attorney's office announced on Tuesday afternoon.

Eldo Kim, a 20-year-old Harvard psychology undergrad majoring in psychology, allegedly sent e-mails to Harvard University police, university officials and others Monday morning warning of "shrapnel bombs" set in specific locations around the campus, according to an FBI affidavit. Kim is set to appear in federal court to face the charges on Wednesday.

It took about 20 minutes before the fake threat caused the evacuations of four buildings. Emerson, Sever and Thayer halls were cleared out in Harvard Yard in addition to the Science Center just beyond the yard. President Obama was briefed, and oh yeah, Kim's final was canceled.

Meanwhile, the FBI, ATF, US Secret Service, Harvard University Police, Cambridge Police, Boston Police and Massachusetts State Police all converged on Harvard Yard.

Kim tried to mask his identity by using the anonymous email service Guerrilla Mail and TOR to hide his IP address. But by nightfall he was already confessing to an FBI agent.

As well as being a dancer with the Harvard Breakers, a bio on a Harvard website identifies Kim as a research assistant studying "partisan taunting," whatever the hell that is.

Kim now faces five years in prison, three years of supervised release and a $250,000 fine. Upside: no more exams. Downside: prison showers.
