A lucky Florida grandfather survived being hit by a stray bullet in the head while driving last Thursday.
Walter Santiago, 62, said he heard a bang and then felt pain on the side of his head. He thought something may have broken off his car and flown in through the open window, until his granddaughter saw blood coming down from his forehead. "You've been shot," she said.
The Pasco County Sheriff's Office said a bullet, most likely fired from far away, came through the window and glanced off Santiago's head just above his left temple.
Santiago was driving at the time because he had just picked up his 13-year-old granddaughter from school. He was travelling east on State Road 54 near Bruce Lane with his driver's side window open about 4 to 5 inches when he was struck by the bullet at around 12:15pm.
Santiago received six stitches at St. Joseph's Hospital in Tampa.
Pasco County Sheriff's Office spokesman Doug Tobin said the bullet must have been fired from far away because the bullet glanced off Santiago's head and bounced around after entering the vehicle.
The bullet came through the window on a downward trajectory, Tobin said. It hit the car's seat near Santiago's right thigh after bouncing off his head. The bullet then bounced up and cracked the front windshield before coming to rest on the passenger's side floor board, the spokesman said.
The police said the bullet was most likely fired from a high-caliber handgun.
No one has been arrested yet.
