Two Italian tourists were found dead on Tuesday evening in a guest house in Kathmandu. According to reports, Luciano Trezza, 53, and Rita Melorio, 48, checked into Satkar guest house on December 11. On December 24, after not seeing the couple for two days, the guest house operator called the police, Nepali paper Republica reported.
The door of the couple's room was locked from inside and police had to break in through the window. After entering the room, they found the couple dead in bed. The room's ventilators were covered with paper and gaps by the doors and windows were blocked up.
Three LPG gas cylinders used by the two tourists to cook in the room are thought to have caused their suffocation and death.
According to the guest house operator, the two Italians were regular clients and sometimes cooked and ate their meals in the room. Police found kitchen items belonging to them in their room.
The bodies were sent to TU Teaching Hospital, local media reported. Once the families of the two tourists reach Kathmandu, autopsies will be carried out and the exact cause of the deaths established, police said.
The accident comes two weeks after two Chinese tourists aged 62 and 55 were found dead in their hotel room in Nagarkot, a village 32 km east of Kathmandu, due to gas poisoning.
