At least nine people were killed when a fire broke out in three cars of an express train in India early Wednesday (January 8).

The fire was reported at around 2:00 a.m. as the train was traveling from Mumbai in western India to Dehradun in the northern state of Uttarakhand. The BBC reports that the fire broke out in one of the second class sleeper cars and spread to two other connecting carriages.

The Times of India reported the train was near the Dahanu railway station in Maharashtra state at the time of the fire, and was stopped at Gholvad railway station near Dahanu road, where the fire was brought under control. CNN-IBN channel reported firefighters were able to contain the blaze in about 3 hours.

The fire was first noticed by an attendant at a railroad crossing, who later informed the engineer and the train was stopped, according to the Hindustan Times.

After traffic was restored on the track, remaining passengers continued their journey in the remaining coaches of the train, the BBC reported.

The cause of the fire is still being investigated.

According to the BBC, "accidents are common on India's immense state-owned rail network, which operates 9,000 passenger trains and carries some 18 million passengers every day, connecting every corner of the country."
