Police state? Florida cop kills German shepherd, arrests owner

2015-05-13 7

St Petersburg Florida is a bad place to be a dog. In 2012, police in the Tampa satellite shot eight dogs during various interactions with the public. A number so high, they were forced to undergo retraining to try and decrease the number of police encounters that end with splattered pooch on the sidewalk. Apparently it didn't work.

Two officers stopped a man in Williams Park last Thursday night. The man, named Kenneth McNeil, had been barred from the park for past disorderly conduct violations, according to police. Sufficiently believable so far, if there is such a thing as being legally banned from a specific public park. But what the police did next called their whole judgment into question. Kenneth McNeil was walking a dog when police stopped him, and we already know how much St Petersburg PD hates civilian K9s. According to witnesses, they immediately began shining lights in McNeil's face and berating him, then pouncing on him while McNeil was disoriented. The witnesses, who say they are acquainted with McNeil and his dog, say that the German shepherd, named Tazzy, then stood up on his hind legs while still tightly restrained by his leash. For this trick, officer Steven L. Laurenzi shot Tazzy four times while his owner and other pedestrians watched.

McNeil has been charged with resisting arrest with violence, and trespassing. St Petersburg police say infernal affairs is looking into whether the shooting was justified.
