A police body camera video just made public shows the fatal shooting of a knife-wielding 38-year-old Idaho by a man a Coeur d'Alene police officer in what the Prosecuting Attorney judged "suicide by cop."
Half an hour before the event of August 25 last year Eric Johnston crashed his pickup, damaging a utility pole half an hour before the tragic events. It's not known whether the crash was intentional or an accident.
He then walked to friend Wendy Wood's small apartment on Young Avenue, just a block away.
Woods had reported a disturbance to police told the attending officer Spencer Mortensen that Johnston had a knife. She appeared to be hurt and told the officer she was worried Johnston was about to turn the knife on himself.
Officer Mortensen can be heard telling Woods to wait outside, he then enters the house and tries to coax the Johnston out peacefully.
And then things escalate rapidly — Johnston appears, wielding two knives, ignoring Mortensen's commands. Mortensen is forced to back up to maintain a safe distance, telling Johnston a total of eight times to put down the knives. He then fires five shots, killing Johnston on the spot.
The Bonner County Prosecuting Attorney said that fatal shooting by officer Mortensen was justified. He has been cleared of any wrongdoing.
